Where's the Exit?

My purgatory stay was longer today than the day before and I like to think that it's because there were MBTA workers giggling about how they were hiding the exits from me. That must be why I always end up in the wrong spot, not just because I'm an idiot who can't follow signs.

Head down, AirPods in, thinking that I may be on time today because my red line ride actually was quick, I'm walking towards where I believe the South Station exit had been the day before. People start to push and run around me, in an obvious hurry to get to work. But we're early today, what's the rush?

Should I also start running? What are they running from? Why are they pushing toward the exit? It's like in a movie when a mob of people is running away from the disaster behind and everyone joins along. Is it worth it to run from whatever is behind me in the station? Normally the only time I run is to chase an ice cream truck. If I run, I'll get sweaty and my hair could get messed up, definitely not worth it.

I finally look up and realize that I am not at the exit, but in fact at the departing silver line bus. Just a follower in a crowd of people, hoping they lead me to where I need to go, not even taking a second to maybe look for an exit sign.

Hoping now that no one chooses me as the person that they follow off of the train unless they're trying to hit their daily step goal, then I'd be the perfect commuter to follow. Walking in circles around each station that I end up at. Swerving around people just to end up at the wrong place. Cursing the slow walkers to then end up behind them again after passing them just moments ago.

It's like I'm trying to shake someone off of my trail, convinced someone is following me. Taking a different route every day just to get out of South Station. I'm going to run out of routes soon, there are only so many times that you can "accidentally" walk to the silver line. I think today, I was probably someone's person to watch, and not because of my outfit.
